SETTING HEALTHY BOUNDARIES WITH FAMILY MEMBERS AROUND POLITICS

With the election looming, you may be feeling a wave of different emotions. It can also be hurtful and very disappointing when you find out a family member has an opposing viewpoint about political matters. Many want to cut the family member off completely and there may be situations in which this is appropriate. However, many love their family despite the disappointment in learning their family members values differ. This can make family dinner and/or visits challenging.

How can you navigate tricky conversations around politics?

The below statements may be helpful in navigating these situations. For those family members that you want to maintain a relationship with (i.e your parents or grandparents) it is ok to reduce contact during this time.

“I appreciate you sharing your perspective, however, I prefer to keep my perspective private”

“Due to the sensitive climate we are in, I choose not to discuss politics”

“Everyone is entitled to their truth”

“Though we may not agree, I respect your opinion”

“Please respect my decision to not participate in political discussions”

“Thanks for providing information, however, I’d rather not be sent any information regarding politics”

“Please do not include me in the group chat. I am taking steps to be emotionally healthy during these challenging times, therefore I am keeping political conversations to a minimum”

When wanting to share your thoughts, find groups that share your beliefs and values to have these discussions. It’s ok to excuse yourself from a discussion that you feel will have a negative outcome. You don’t have to force others to see your point of view.  You don’t have to make it your job to get them to “get it.”

Remember, you can love and appreciate the memories with them outside of their political views. I hope this helps, remember to take care of yourself and each other.
